Quick Start Guide
This guide will help you perform your first system optimization using Winhance. In just a few minutes, you'll have a cleaner, faster Windows experience.
Step 1: Launch Winhance
After installation, launch Winhance from your desktop or start menu. You'll be taken directly to the Software & Apps view, where you can manage Windows apps and install external software.
When you launch Winhance for the very first time, it automatically creates backups to protect your system:
- System Restore Point: A restore point named
Winhance initial restore pointis created. - Registry Backups: Full registry backups are created and stored at:
C:\ProgramData\Winhance\Backups
This ensures you have a safety net in case you need to revert any changes. Note that registry backups are only created once on first launch.
Use the left side menu to navigate between the main sections: Software & Apps, Optimize, Customize, and Advanced Tools. Each section provides different options for configuring your Windows system.
Step 2: Explore the Interface
Winhance is divided into four main areas:
- Software & Apps: Manage Windows built-in apps and install essential software.
- Optimize: System tuning for performance, privacy, and gaming.
- Customize: Visual tweaks for taskbar, start menu, and explorer.
- Advanced Tools: WIMUtil and Autounattend XML generator for custom Windows installations.
Take some time to explore each section and understand what options are available before making changes.
Step 3: Manual Optimization (Recommended)
We recommend exploring settings manually first so you understand exactly what changes will be made to your system:
- Navigate to the Optimize section in the left menu.
- Browse through each category: Privacy & Security, Power, Gaming & Performance, Updates, Notifications, and Sound.
- Hover over any setting to see a detailed description of what it does.
- Select only the settings you want to apply by clicking their toggles.
- Once you've made your selections, click Apply Selections.
You can also navigate to the Customize section to apply visual-based settings for your taskbar, start menu, explorer, and Windows theme.
Step 4: Use the Recommended Config (Quick Start Alternative)
If you prefer a "one-click" approach, you can apply the Recommended Configuration. This is a balanced set of optimizations that works well for most users.
- Click the Import Config button (folder icon) in the top navigation bar.
- Select Import recommended config.
- Review the import options in the dialog that appears.
- Click OK to apply the configuration.
While the Recommended Configuration works well for most users, settings can have different effects depending on your hardware setup and Windows version. Always review what changes will be made, and remember that Winhance creates backups on first launch in case you need to revert.
For more details on configuration files, including how to create and share your own, see the Configuration Files Guide.
Use the search bar at the top of the application to quickly find specific settings or Windows apps you want to remove.
Step 5: Restart Your System
While many changes take effect immediately, we recommend restarting your computer after a major optimization to ensure all registry changes and service updates are correctly applied.
For power users, Winhance includes Advanced Tools that let you create custom Windows installation media:
- Autounattend XML Generator: Generate an
autounattend.xmlfile based on your current Winhance selections. This allows Windows to automatically apply your settings during a fresh installation. - WIMUtil: A comprehensive tool for customizing Windows ISOs, including driver injection, image format conversion, and bootable ISO creation.
These tools can be used together to create a fully customized "zero-touch" Windows installer. See the Advanced Tools page for an overview, or dive into the detailed guides:
